Psalm 46 (ESV)

God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

In fear of the incoming Assyrian attackers, King Hezekiah tries to buy his protection by paying off the invaders, but his monetary gift doesn’t satisfy. He erects walls and accumulates shields, but he can’t build his security. He prays that God would deliver his city from the enemy. That night God wipes out 185,000 Assyrian soldiers outside the gates of Jerusalem in 2 Kings 18-19.

God secures and sustains his people for his glory.

God is our Securer strengthening his people (v. 1-3). We search for security in our accounts, our relationships, our abilities, and all sorts of other areas. While those are good things, they are harmful when they become our ultimate security. Although Hezekiah was behind walls and a well-equipped army, he knew that God was his fortress, his strength, and his help: his ultimate security.

Because God is mighty enough to protect, strong enough to strengthen, and present enough to help, we don’t have to fear no matter what the circumstances.

God is our Sustainer stabilizing his city (v. 4-7). God is within his city and his people. The Holy Spirit dwells in us and stabilizes us so that we aren’t beach balls tossed around on choppy waves, victims of our own circumstances. God is unchangeable and doesn’t move. When he fills his people, they are not moved.

God is with his people and his church. He aids, supports, and comforts them at all times, especially in times of trouble. If he was not with us, our efforts to please him would be in vain.

God is our Savior glorifying himself throughout his world (v. 8-11). God protects us from danger, strengthens us in our weakness, helps us in our trouble, blesses us with his grace, stabilizes us in our uncertainty, sustains us through life, and saves us from certain defeat to glorify himself throughout all the earth. By destroying the wicked Assyrians and preserving his chosen people, God is glorified. He destroys the destroyers to make peace.

Some 700 years later, also outside the gates of Jerusalem, God was once again glorified by the absolute defeat of his enemies. The kingdom of darkness that tried to halt God’s plan of redemption by staining Christ’s perfection failed when Jesus uttered the words, “It is finished” (John 19:30, Ps. 46:6). At that moment his sacrifice for sin was deemed sufficient and his perfect righteousness was locked in for all eternity.

This victory is described in Colossians 2:15 when Paul writes, “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” Evil has lost and Christ has won.

Because of Jesus’ victory in life, death, and resurrection, we can trust him as our ultimate securer, rely on him to be our primary sustainer, and live without fear no matter the circumstances.
