It’s dangerous to walk in darkness. If you’ve ever run in a field late at night, you’ll notice that your foot can hit a hole that you haven’t seen and almost trip. You could also be walking through your room late at night, trying to get a midnight snack, and your foot lands on a LEGO. You experience more pain than you ever come to imagine. It’s dangerous to walk in darkness.
John 8:12 – “I AM the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
On our own, we walk in darkness. Our minds don’t think clearly and make bad choices. Emotionally, we stir up horrible feelings toward others: hate and jealous and anger and bitterness. We also do bad things that hurt ourselves and hurt others. When we put all of that together, we have very dark and desperate lives.
But through Christ, we have light. He is the light of the world, breaking through our darkness and showing us the way in which we are to live. He is the light of life, giving us new life when we are in Him.
Isaiah 9:2 – “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light, a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness…for a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” This light that shines shocks the darkness and overcomes it through His life, death and resurrection. Jesus is an eternal testimony that Light has won, and darkness has lost.
Our hope today is that if we were left to ourselves, we would walk in darkness. But through Christ we have light and life.
Prayer
Jesus, you are the Light of the World. I have walked in darkness and I would continue to walk in darkness if I were left to my own. But because of You, I have light, and I am a new creation. Give me the strength to follow Your leading through Your Word. May your light shine through me so that others may come to know You.
